August Terms at SMU-in Taos

This one-hour course satisfies your Wellness Two requirement for graduation. You will be given a chance to try a variety of group exercise formats and learn fitness principles that will encourage you to maintain optimal fitness for life. The class sessions will help you improve your cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and even body composition. This class will be different every day, but you can always be sure that you will get a great workout, have fun and not get bored with the routine! The various activities will include: step aerobics-boot camp style, power yoga, body sculpting and mountain biking.

The instructor will offer two classes every day, one in the morning before breakfast and one in the late afternoon before dinner or mid evening after dinner. All class sessions will meet at the auditorium and be one hour in length with the exception of the weekend biking sessions. You will be able to pick and choose sessions you desire to participate in that works well schedule wise with your other S.M.U.-in-Taos course.

Students are required to log /attend 20 hours of exercise classes, each class being one hour with the exception of the weekend bike rides (counts for two hours). The students may substitute up to 10 hours of these individual exercise class sessions with mountain sports activities: off campus hikes (one hike=three exercise hours), raft trip* (two exercise hours), fly-fishing* (three exercise hours), horseback riding* (one exercise hour) and or rock climbing* (three exercise hours) and one environmental volunteer project with the Carson National Forest (two exercise hours).

Description of the Specific Fitness Activities

Power Yoga-is an intense and rigorous form of yoga emphasizing strength, flexibility and stamina. It is characterized by the continual flow of Sun Salutations performed between a variety of postures. The purpose of this continual flow is to create heat in the body. Students will leave the class feeling invigorated, refreshed and less stressed!

Step Aerobics-Boot Camp Style is an intense cardiovascular workout principally using the step platforms where one performs a unique variety of steps up and down on them. Some high and low impact aerobics on the floor along with jump rope and obstacle course work will also be incorporated in this over the top cardio blast session. Burn fat and get fit!

Body Sculpting- is a great overall conditioning class to increase muscular definition/tone, decrease body fat, and increase muscular endurance. The students will work with dumb bells, resistance tubes, fit and medicine balls. Major muscles groups of the upper and lower body will be addressed along with abdominals.

Mountain Bike Riding- SMU-in-Taos has a great mountain bike trail (no motorized vehicles allowed) right across the highway from the main campus. It is relatively easy, great for beginning mountain bike riders featuring beautiful scenery. During the biking sessions, we will venture on this trail and learn how to negotiate the terrain. Must furnish own bike and helmet. Mountain biking is a great cardio workout and also conditions the legs. You will feel energized after each ride and will probably want to ride frequently while you are visiting the Fort. Never bike alone!

* The mountain sports activities can either be scheduled through the Mountain Sports class if there are spaces or can be individually scheduled by the student. If scheduled within the Mountain Sports class, the students must pay up front to the SMU- in- Taos office at designated time. If a student individually plans to schedule a mountain sports activity , he/she must schedule, and pay on his or her own. All hikes and the volunteer project are free and do not require reserving spots.
