SMU-IN-TAOS: ASAG 3310/4310/5310
Studio Workshop: Building and Imagining the LandscapeA focused and intensive studio experience in sculpture, drawing and printmaking, with emphasis upon the physical forms and resources of the landscape of Northern New Mexico. The course will develop an emphasis upon forms of the landscape through sculpture, drawing and printmaking, working toward imaginative invention within individual studies.
Studies in printmaking will be primarily woodcut and monotype with some opportunity for drypoint among the more advanced students. The teaching emphasis will be on individual dialogue towards the development of issues raised in earlier studies, particularly through drawing, into coherent thematic studies across different media.
Class discussions focus on "landscape as subject," considered both metaphorically and literally. Artistic approaches that are indigenous to the area, as well as contemporary trends, will be examined as relevant. Field trips to artists' studios and historic sites, visits to museums and galleries, slide lectures and visiting lecturers are scheduled throughout the workshop.
Workshop participants are expected to react to the unique qualities of the Fort Burgwin area and to search for and develop a personal response to the stimuli they encounter.
Students in the Division of Art may take directed studies in an individual medium for up to four units with permission by the instructors. Students should register under the appropriate medium (i.e., ASDR 5302, 5303 for Drawing; ASPT 3306, 4306, 5306 for Painting; ASPR 5302, 5303 for Printmaking; ASSC 5302, 5303 for Sculpture). Students must fulfill prerequisites for directed studies. All work is to be by written agreement with supervising instructor.
