"Timely and touching . . . I very much enjoy Adler’s first-rate narrative style. Words flow smoothly here—making this an unusual archaeological report indeed."

David Hurst Thomas, American Museum of Natural History

Several hundred years after their ancestors first settled this high valley in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the modern Picuries welcomed a small group of scholars to study the history of their home. Beginning in 1961, this partnership between the Picuris people and a research team led by archaeologist Dr. Herbert Dick has shed light on eight centuries of tradition and culture change at Picuris. This volume details the history, social organization, native craft traditions, architecture, and other facets of this unique Native American community in northern New Mexico.

Michael A. Adler is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University and director of SMU-in-Taos located in Fort Burgwin, New Mexico.
