THE CLEMENTS
CENTER-DEGOLYER LIBRARY
RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANTS
The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies offers
the Clements Center-DeGolyer Research Travel Grants
to applicants who live outside the greater Dallas-Fort Worth
area
to encourage a broader and more intensive use of the special collections at
DeGolyer Library. Major subject strengths include the European
exploration and discovery of America, the development of the Spanish and Mexican
borderlands, and the history of the Trans-Mississippi West. The library also
possesses significant collections in the fields of business, transportation,
especially related to railroads, and science and technology with notable
holdings in the history of geology. Other collections are devoted to major and
minor figures in English and American literature and there is significant
material related to tourism in Mexico.
The DeGolyer Library preserves close to 100,000 volumes of rare
and scholarly works, over 2,500 separate manuscript collections, over 500,000
photographs, several thousand maps, hundreds of rare periodicals and newspapers,
and a large and growing collection of printed ephemera. The library’s website
is http://www.smu.edu/cul/degolyer.
The Clements Center-DeGolyer Library Research
Travel Grants provide an opportunity to conduct
scholarly research in the DeGolyer Library on any aspect of the Southwestern
and borderlands experience. The $500 a week grant is awarded for periods of one to four weeks to
help to defray costs of travel, lodging, and research materials.
In addition to our usual grants, we are
pleased that the James Butler Bonham Chapter of the Daughters of the
Texas Republic, through our offices, offers an annual research grant
of $500 for a scholar whose work at the DeGolyer Library will advance our
understanding of the history of Texas.
If the grant request is for research in
Texas History, applicants should specify the James Butler Bonham Chapter of the Daughters of the
Texas Republic Award on their application, their research topic and
the number of weeks they are requesting. We will look at their topic, and
the depth of the DeGolyer's collections in that area, and decide whether
or not to offer the Texas History grant, and if yes, we will respond to
their request by offering a certain number of weeks.
We may offer the Bonham Award, as a
single grant, or combine it with the other grant funds if there seems to
be a good match with the scholar's work. The Bonham Award of $500
is only offered once in an academic year, whereas the Clements Center-DeGolyer
Library Research Travel Grants are ongoing and have a "rolling
deadline" in that people can apply for them throughout the year.
Applicants can request up to four weeks of
grant money for research.
Applicants should provide a project outline and explain how work in the
DeGolyer Library's collections will enhance it. Please specify the length
of research time needed at the library. Applicants should also include a
curriculum vitae and two letters of reference from persons who can assess the
significance of their project and their scholarship record. Applicants who
have questions about the appropriateness of the DeGolyer collections to their
research project should consult in advance Russell Martin, director of the
DeGolyer Library:
rlmartin@smu.edu or call (214) 768-3234.
Grant applications are accepted throughout the year. Send applications to:
