A Texas Patriot on Trial in Mexico:
José Antonio Navarro and  the Texan Santa Fe Expedition

A Bilingual Edition, with Translation, Introduction and Notes by
Andrés Reséndez

This is the story of a Texas patriot put on trial for treason by Antonio López de Santa Anna.  José Antonio Navarro was a Mexican-Texan who supported the Texas Revolution of 1836 and then joined the Texan Santa Fé expedition of 1841, a venture that sought to annex portions of neighboring New Mexico to the upstart Republic of Texas.  The expedition ended in disaster.  New Mexico’s authorities apprehended the Texans and forced Navarro and others to walk in chains to Mexico City.  Navarro alone was tried for treason.

A Texas Patriot on Trial in Mexico contains the Spanish transcription and English translation of dramatic proceedings, published here for the first time in either language.  The translator and editor of this remarkable volume, Andrés Reséndez, teaches history at the University of California, Davis, and is author of Changing National Identities at the Frontier: Texas and New Mexico, 1800-1850 (Cambridge, New York: Cambridge University Press, 2005).  Reséndez’s insightful introduction and notes provide modern readers with the context to understand Navarro’s trial and its surprising outcome.  This previously unknown story opens a rare window into the conflicting loyalties and torturous political situation of thousands of Spanish-speaking Texans after their separation and before the United States and Mexico plunged into war.

The excellent introductions, focused document selection, and translations put in clear perspective this
painful and little-known episode of José Antonio Navarro, whose dedication to Texas on this occasion
nearly cost him his life.
