Scholars interested in the Spanish frontier in North America recognize the value of expedition diaries.  These first-hand accounts provide rich detail about contact with native peoples and the natural world.  Yet, many texts pertaining to the colonial period remain unpublished only in unreliable English translations.

With Mendoza's Expedition in Texas, Brian Imhoff offers the first critical Spanish language edition of an original expedition diary pertaining to the early history of Texas.  His work meets the highest standard of critical textual analysis.  For the first time scholars have ready access to the Mendoza diary as it was originally written.

"This study sets a standard for the paleographical transcription of documents used by historians of the early colonial history of the Americas...and is recommended to students and aficionados of Spanish colonial history in the southwestern United States."

-Joseph P. Sánchez, Intermountain Spanish Colonial Research Center, National Park Service, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“This work answers the call of the many scholars who have long been saying that we need more texts in the original Spanish and not only in English translation.”

-Giorgio Perssinotto, Professor Spanish and Portuguese, University of California at Santa Barbara, author of Documenting Everyday Life in Early California

Brian Imhoff is is currently working on a bilingual edition of “The trial in absentia of Juan Domínguez de Mendoza,” October 8, 1685, based on the Spanish Archives of New Mexico.  Imhoff is Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University.
