Mustangs thunder to campus

The Sculptor Donors

John W. Carpenter III, Bonner Carpenter and Cele Carpenter (right) stand in front of the Mustangs, made possible by Mr. Carpenter's generosity.
The SMU Mustangs was presented Wednesday, April 27, to SMU by real estate developer John W. Carpenter III in honor of his wife Cele Slaughter Briscoe Carpenter on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Carpenter is a 1978 graduate of SMU with a major in journalism.

The larger-than-life sculptor is a depiction of wild mustangs, the inspiration for the SMU mascot. Through the Carpenters' generosity, SMU now has a tangible representation of the spirit of past generations of mustangs, as well as a lasting symbol for generations to come.

Taking part in the ribbon-cutting were:

Judith Banes '69, '78
Bonner Carpenter
Cele Slaughter Briscoe Carpenter '78

Jim Caswell '63, '66, '70
Kelly Hoglund Compton '79
