Semester Online

Application and Enrollment

Note: The following statements apply to the Summer and Fall 2014 terms. Spaces are limited and enrollment is on a first-come basis.

To qualify to enroll for a Semester Online course, a SMU student must:

  •     Be an undergraduate, degree-seeking student
  •     Have a 3.000 or higher cumulative SMU GPA
  •     Not be on academic probation
  •     Not have had a Honor Code sanction of HV or a disciplinary suspension, and
  •     Have completed two terms of enrollment at SMU if they entered from high school,
  •     or one term of enrollment at SMU if they entered as a transfer student

Students begin the two part registration process for Semester Online courses by submitting an online application to Semester Online. After the student submits a registration application, the student will be notified if additional information is needed for the Semester Online portion of the enrollment process. The student and SMU will be notified of the student's approval to take a Semester Online course.

Concurrently with the application to Semester Online, the student should obtain a SMU Student Petition for Semester Online Enrollment form (PDF). This form will require the student to discuss with their SMU academic adviser how the selected Semester Online course will fit into their overall SMU enrollment and degree plan. This form should be completed and submitted to the Office of Special Studies* located in the Blanton Building, Suite 100. Note the deadlines on the calendars.

Upon approval by both Semester Online and SMU, the student will be administratively registered into the requested course. Enrollment in Semester Online coursework will be a current course registration on the student’s class schedule and count as part of their enrollment load. Standard enrollment load rules apply. Enrollment for a Semester Online course is not complete until it appears on my.SMU as part of your enrollment for the term.

SMU students are limited to one Semester Online course per term, and to four Semester Online courses during their undergraduate career. This includes courses dropped with a grade of W. Semester Online courses generally are not appropriate, and typically will not be approved, during the term a SMU student is participating in a SMU Study Abroad program.

A student with a disability and anticipating needing some accommodations for a Semester Online (SON) course, must first contact Disability Accommodations & Success Strategies (DASS) to be made eligible for accommodations at SMU.  DASS will provide verification of the accommodation for the student who is responsible for coordinating the needed accommodations with Semester Online.
