TRANSFER CREDIT POLICIES

The following transfer equivalency information has been compiled by SMU Enrollment Services to assist prospective transfer students in planning programs of study compatible with the general degree requirements of SMU. Careful review of this information should facilitate transfer to the University and minimize the likelihood of loss of credits in the process. This equivalency list is based on the 2006-07 undergraduate academic catalogs for both SMU and the external college/university.

Transfer policy applies to students at the original point of entry into the University. Individual school and departmental policies and approvals govern the transferability of courses to the University for matriculated SMU students. Transferable credits may or may not apply to a specific degree program.

Only 2006-07 transferable courses are listed. If a course is not listed, it simply means it is not transferable. To be transferable, a course must be comparable in content and level to an existing SMU course. Courses listed will be counted as transferable credit hours and used to calculate transferable Grade Point Average. Students may apply for Academic Forgiveness for coursework completed 10 or more years prior to entry term at SMU.

Transfer Guidelines

  • University policy requires a grade of C- or greater for a transfer course that also has an SMU equivalent course. All courses with grades less than a C-.will receive no transferable credit however, the failed grade is calculated in the transferable Grade Point Average.

  • If a course is repeated due to a failing grade, all attempted hours and earned grade points will be used to calculate transferable GPA. For repeated courses with grades of  C- or  above, only the first attempt will be awarded credit.

  • Grade of ‘W’ (withdrawn) will not be used to calculate transferable GPA.

  • Grade of “I” (incomplete) will be calculated as F.

  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Two different one-hour activity courses will transfer to meet the Wellness requirement, but additional courses will be non-transferable.

  • SMU reserves the right to correct any errors.

Transferable GPA is calculated according to the scale below
