STUDENT PETITION PROCEDURE FOR ENROLLMENT DISCREPANCIES

Adjustments to a student's enrollment/transcript for a semester will be accepted beginning after the 12th class day for Fall and Spring (5th class day for Summer Term) and should follow procedure outlined below:

  1. Prepare a petition, clearly and completely, explaining what you are asking to be done and why you feel that any exception should be granted. Your petition must be typed or neatly printed. Include your name, SMU ID number, local address, local telephone number, and e-mail address in your petition.
  2. Collect all supporting documentation for your petition. This may include statements from faculty involved, your adviser, enrollment services, etc. Please be sure all paper work is included. Any incomplete petitions may be returned to you.
  3. If your petition is to add a course or drop a course, complete a Schedule Change Request Form with your adviser.
  4. If your petition involves a course in which grades have already been assigned, please have the professor send a Change of Grade Form to the Dean's office for approval. This form will be included in your petition.
  5. Prepare a check for $25 per add and $25 per transaction.
  6. Submit the above items to your Academic Dean.
  7. The Academic Dean's staff will review your petition and supporting materials and will forward them to the Registrar's Office. The Dean's staff may endorse your request, may simply comment on your request, or may suggest denial of your request.
  8. The Registrar's staff will review your request based on your written petition and supporting documentation. Therefore, it is essential your petition be complete and clear. If your petition is approved, appropriate updates will be made to your enrollment records; and a confirmation will be mailed to you. If your petition is not approved, you will be notified by mail and your check returned.
