Thomas W. Tunks, Associate Provost

Thomas W. Tunks, Associate Provost, oversees the Division of Enrollment Services (Admissions, Financial Aid, Bursar, and Registrar), the International Center, the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center (A-LEC), SMU-in-Taos, the President’s Scholars, Dean's Scholars and International Baccalaureate Scholars Programs.  He also chairs the Strategic  Enrollment Management (SEM) Group.

Tom W. Tunks is Professor of Music, and has been an Associate Provost at Southern Methodist University since 1998. His professional experience includes teaching in Michigan public schools, and serving as music consultant to the Ministry of Education and as professor of low brass at the Conservatorio del Tolima while in the Peace Corps in Colombia, South America. After receiving a Ph.D. degree in music from Michigan State University in 1973, he taught at Loyola University in New Orleans and the University of Kentucky, and was head of Music Education at SMU from 1980 until being named Associate Dean of SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts in 1992. His primary research interests are music learning and perception, and his most enjoyable teaching time is devoted to Acoustics of Music.

 Dr. Tunks is the author of numerous research journal articles, in addition to "Applications of Psychological Positions on Learning and Development to Musical Behavior", in the Handbook of Music Psychology ( D. Hodges, ed.) and "Transfer of Music Learning", in the Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, (R. Colwell, ed.). He was on the team that wrote the fine arts portion of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the state pre-college education standards. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education, UPDATE, and The Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning, and is associate editor of Psychomusicology. He is also past research chairman of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Kentucky Music Educators Association. His wife, Jeanne, who holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction and educational research, is on the faculty of the University of North Texas. They enjoy life in Dallas with their sons, Adam and Gordon.
