Information for Job Applicants & Candidates

We are advertising two positions this year: one assistant professorship (tenure-track) and one open rank position (tenured or tenure-track). Both are open AOS and AOC.

Here is some information about the department, the university, and the city that may be of interest to potential applicants and candidates for these positions.

The Department

SMU is a private, comprehensive university committed to nonsectarian teaching, intellectual rigor, and open, unfettered inquiry. And we are a congenial group of productive analytic philosophers whose work is published in leading journals (including Mind, Noûs, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, the Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Analysis, Philosophical Studies, Philosophical Quarterly, and the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science) and by leading presses (Oxford and Cambridge).

Because of our strong commitment to research, our tenured and tenure-track faculty typically teach two classes per term: one of our introductory level courses (with no more than 35 students and repeated each semester), and one upper-level class of their choosing (with no more than 25 students). Historically, we have also been able to offer tenure-track faculty a one-term research sabbatical in their fourth year.

We value collegiality highly, and we regularly discuss and read each other's work. In fact, we regularly get together to discuss work in progress over dinner at a local restaurant (on the department). Additionally, we have a philosophy of mind reading group that maintains the blog Brain Pains and a practical philosophy working group.

Our most recent tenure-track hires earned their PhDs from Michigan, ANU, UCSD, UCLA, Arizona, and Brown.

Philosophers who began or spent part of their career here include Mark Heller (Syracuse), Mark Kaplan (Indiana), Alastair Norcross (Colorado), Alan Hausman (Hunter College), and Roberta Ballarin (British Columbia).
