NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS

Family and Friends

Welcome to the SMU Family and Friends Website.  This site is designed to help parents and family members support the educational opportunities that the university provides for your student.  We are thrilled to have you as a part of our SMU community.

SMU believes that the success of every student is a partnership between the student, the university, and the student's family.  The Parent & Family Program is our way of providing information and assistance as families encourage their student to take full advantage of this myriad of experiences offered here at SMU.

SMU prides itself in creating an educational environment that not only offers excellent academic programs but also allows students to grow socially, physically, and spiritually.  Students can find support for his/her interests in the classroom and also for his/her interests outside of the classroom.  SMU has a strong leadership development and community service component and students are introduced to these programs through our orientation activities and through the Wellness program.  However, we find that the encouragement of parents has much to do with a students involvement in extra curricular activities.

Through this website you will find information on all of the programs, services, and offerings that the university provides for your student.  As Parent Liaison, I am here to answer questions, direct you to information and services, and serve as an advocate for parent issues.  The SMU Mother’s and Dad’s Clubs are active organizations that bring together parents to support ongoing university programs,  to raise money for scholarships, sponsor events at Family Weekend, and participate in SMU outreach efforts including fundraising and recruitment activities.  Two of our newest outreach programs are the Parent Career Network through the Hegi Family Career Development Center and the Regional Representatives who work with the Admission and Alumni offices.

It is a student's responsibility to seek the services he or she needs and to take advantage of all the opportunities here.  We need parents to help in this regard and we feel that the more you know about SMU, the better you can help us help your student.

We hope that you find the resources you need to be an active partner in the success of your student.  This website will be a communication link for you.  Make it one of your favorites for quick reference.
