Expert: Evangelicals and Mccain – WWJD?

Matthew Wilson

Do evangelicals have a prayer with John McCain as the GOP frontrunner? Matthew Wilson is an expert in religion and politics and professor of political science at SMU. He says evangelicals are in a difficult position:

“If evangelicals want a seat at the table in a McCain administration, religious conservatives would do well to mend fences with him now (and how hard can that be with a Senator who has a 100 percent pro-life voting record?), seeing that he is significantly better on the issues that they care about most than any Democratic alternative.”

“It is time for the religious conservatives to get on board with John McCain. They can continue to vote for Huckabee as long as he remains in the race, but it's clear now that he will not be the nominee. In fact, Huckabee's decision to stay in the race (and presumably to continue to absorb lots of votes from evangelicals) actually helps McCain by dampening the prospects for any Romney resurgence based on unifying the party's most conservative elements.”
