AMSTERDAM (SMU) – Lovisa Lindh (Ytterby, Sweden) got the perfect birthday gift over the weekend after placing third in the 800 meters final at the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam.

"I was so tired at the end and it was so tight. I had to pass them in the last few metres. I got myself a perfect birthday present," Lindh said.

The SMU alum earned the bronze medal with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 00.37 seconds, breaking her previous personal-best time (2:00.51) set earlier this season.

The Swedish middle-distance runner has shown much improvement since the European Athletics Championships in Zurich two years ago. Lindh advanced to the semifinals but placed sixth (2:02.60) in her heat to finish 12th overall.

With 33 competitors in the qualifying rounds, Lindh easily advanced to the semifinals with the second-fastest time of 2:01.77.

The competition picked up in the semifinals as times began to drop, but that didn't stop Lindh who continued to look strong as she posted the third fastest-time (2:00.66) to advance to the finals.

In the finals, Lindh was in contention for the gold late in the race, but Ukraine's Nataliya Pryshchepa split Renelle Lamote of France and Lindh on the straightaway to secure the victory in 1:59.70.
