Academic Advising for Transfer Students

For each transfer student, the SMU campus is a new place with a different campus culture and with different policies and procedure than those you have previously experienced.  Each transfer student has an academic adviser:  a professor or professional adviser who will help you understand SMU's requirements and procedures, explore academic interests, clarify academic expectations, select courses, and develop an academic plan.

Start Planning Now

Now is the time to start your academic planning by reading through the admission requirements and degree requirements for your intended major(s) in SMU’s Undergraduate Catalog.

Also, your academic adviser and the Dedman College Advising Center website are invaluable tools to help you understand SMU’s requirements and to plan your academic career at SMU.  Use this website to begin planning, to begin familiarizing yourself with academic policy, and to start exploring what SMU has to offer.

If you come to SMU with a high number of hours earned and have not planned coursework according to the admission requirements and/or introductory coursework for a specific major, your graduation may be delayed.  Contact your intended school of record with possible concerns.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Once your transcripts are received at SMU, your coursework will be evaluated.  You will be informed of the equivalency of each course through a Transfer Evaluation Report.  You will want to review the Transfer Evaluation Report carefully with your adviser to confirm that the evaluation is accurate.

Meeting Your Academic Adviser

You will meet your Academic Adviser during orientation.  For general information and to start your academic planning, visit the Dedman College Advising Center website.
