Career Services: All first year students enroll in Career Orientation, a course designed to broaden their interest and awareness of the wide variety of professions within the field of music. Faculty and arts professionals from the community share their insights as well as their career development paths, and cover such specialties within music as education, performance, conducting, business, media and the military, among others. Students create their own personal resume and develop skills in completing cover letters and job applications and maintain a portfolio for future development and reference.
The Career Services Office publishes a monthly bulletin which lists professional vacancies, competitions, and auditions. A bulletin board prominently displays posters on summer festivals, local musical opportunities and graduate school notices. In addition, the Career Office serves as an information and audition site for some twenty pre-eminent national music festivals including Aspen, Brevard, Chatauqua, Eastern and Opera West. Throughout their time at SMU, music students have easy access to the Director of Career Services for personal advice on career choices, resume updates and the profession of music. For more information, contact Dr. James Ode, Director of Music Career Services, at 214.768.3719.
