Award-winning veteran journalist Frank Sesno to give the 2007 Sammons Media Ethics Lecture on Oct. 10
Award-winning journalist Frank Sesno, a veteran of CNN and currently a special correspondent and documentary producer for the network, will give the eighth annual Rosine Smith Sammons Lecture in Media Ethics at SMU. The lecture is at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, in Caruth Auditorium. The event is free; however, tickets are required and are available through the Meadows Ticket Office at 214-768-2787. Read more.

The recent controversy surrounding the racist and sexist comments radio personality Don Imus made about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team brought to the forefront of people’s minds the need to continue discussing race and gender issue, and how specific words can convey images and meanings that go beyond the literal definition of the words. Journalism professors Mel Coffee and Rick Stevens joined Corporate Communications and Public Affairs professors Maria Dixon, Owen Lynch and Dan Schill to host a Town Hall Meeting April 30 to discuss Imus’s comments, the impacts felt by various communities and when certain language is allowable in various forms of media.

Division of Journalism to Offer Specialized Areas of Focus to Majors
The Division of Journalism, with a major gift from the Belo Foundation, took a significant step forward in 2003 with the establishment of a digital newsroom, television studio and website. Department faculty then determined that the best way to take the department to the next level was to develop new programs that would allow Meadows Journalism students to focus their training on a particular aspect of the industry, creating a program focusing on the convergence of print, broadcast and internet journalism.
