This year’s Academy Awards represented more than the annual celebration of the year’s best films and the people who made each one possible. While most years generate considerable debate about who should win the Best Actor or Best Actress awards, this year’s event stirred discussion on a much larger scale, reflecting society on the whole, rather than merely the film industry.

Films such as TransAmerica, Capote and, most notably, Brokeback Mountain, spawned passionate debate about the roles of sexual orientation and the tolerance and acceptance thereof. According to Meadows Assistant Cinema/TV Professor Sean Griffin, this year’s Oscars reflected a significant shift in the country’s acceptance of gay and lesbian people throughout society. Brokeback Mountain was the most talked-about of the films, and Griffin – who recently co-authored his third book, Queer Images: A History of Gay and Lesbian Film in America – said the film reflects just how far Hollywood and the entire country have come in terms of tolerance.
