Cinema-Television

Degree ProgramsDegree Programs: The Cinema-Television curriculum is designed to provide students with a program of technical, scholarly, and aesthetic training in the fields of film and television. The program is intended to prepare the student for a career in professional film/television production and writing and to develop creative skills within the art forms.
A sequence of courses offers experience in writing, shooting, and editing film and video. A wide variety of additional courses in cinema and television history, theory and criticism provide a basic and necessary knowledge of these media as art forms.

The Bachelor of Arts in Cinema-Television curriculum offers separate concentrations (tracks) in cinema and television. Both concentrations are designed to deliver a well-rounded training program in the fields of film and television and serve to prepare students for a career in professional film/television production and/ or writing — and to develop their creative abilities in these media. Courses in cinema and television history, theory and criticism provide fundamental knowledge of both media as art forms and as social and cultural institutions.

The Cinema track gives students experience in writing, shooting, directing and editing film and video projects — as well as courses in the history, theory and aesthetics of the medium. A basic video production course and two 16mm film production courses are required. From there, advanced elective courses in screenwriting, production, and editing are offered to develop technical skills and creativity as a filmmaker. For a complete course of study, click here.

The Television track allows students to produce and edit electronic media and video projects, and offers courses in the history, criticism, economics and social effects of the contemporary mass media — including new moving image technologies. Through advanced elective courses in multimedia applications; global media systems; electronic media programming, sales, and policy; and audience research, majors are prepared for a rewarding career in the television industry. The Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs provide a base for the emerging scholar and practitioner in Cinema-Television. The blending of theory and practice is vital to an understanding of the production process that leads to entertainment and educational/informational programs. What's more, the program is designed to place the media in a historical and cultural context and to offer important critical perspectives on programming produced for television and film. Each degree provides a strong basis for a career in television, and either will fully prepare the student who wishes to go on to a Ph.D. program. The M.A. program in Cinema-Television requires two academic years of fulltime study. Students select either the Research track or the Professional track. The Research track culminates with a thesis, while the Professional track builds to a final creative project.

The M.F.A. program in Television/Radio is considered a terminal degree requiring two academic years of full-time study, plus a creative thesis. Students enrolling in the M.F.A. program choose a course of study dealing specifically with their creative area of interest. The student completes a thesis production under the direction of a faculty member and presents the project before a faculty committee along with an essay detailing the concepts involved, the research necessary for the production, a production book and a post-production critique. In addition, the student is required to take the core graduate courses and to develop a program of study in consultation with an adviser. In addition to the two years generally required for coursework completion, the M.F.A. student should allow one to two terms for the thesis project.
