Assistant Professor of Art, Experimental Digital Media--Emphasis in Video

The Division of Art in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a tenure-track full-time position for its evolving program and curricula in electronic media, with an emphasis on the use of video technologies, commencing in the Fall of 2008. Creative energy, intellectual strength, and commitment to teaching are essential. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. The candidate selected will be expected to be a significant partner in connecting the Division to an increasingly diverse and globally connected community at the university and in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Studio Art with concentration or equivalent experience in digital or electronic media. Broad understanding of contemporary art and theory, as well as the history of video and electronic art and their position within the broader scope of studio art media. At least two years full-time teaching beyond graduate study with evidence of excellence in teaching. Must be capable of curricular development, graduate and undergraduate teaching, and interdisciplinary outreach to areas within a comprehensive school of the arts and the university, including cinema/TV, theater and performance, digital gaming, engineering, sound. Substantial exhibition record within video/electronic arts.

Additionally, candidates should submit a digital portfolio of no more than 20 images, including up to 5 video or sound clips to SMU SlideRoom at www.smu.slideroom.com, along with a copy of their resume and a brief statement articulating the position of video/electronic art within contemporary and traditional art practice. Digital portfolios only will be accepted. Full instructions are online for preparation of material, size and format. Clips should be no longer than 5 min in length for initial screening. Websites will not be accepted for application unless they constitute the primary artistic medium for the candidate.
To ensure full consideration for the position, the application must be postmarked by January 10, 2008 but the committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. The committee will notify applicants of the employment decision after the position is filled.
