POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Assistant Professor of Art History (Open Field: “Technologies of Visual Communication”)

Art historian, “Technologies of Visual Communication”. Southern Methodist University. full-time, tenure-track.

The Division of Art History, Meadows School of the Arts at SMU, invites applications  for a historian working in any period whose research interrogates the forms and effects of technologies of visual communication across various media and theoretical domains. We encourage applications from scholars engaged with technologies of writing; early print culture; the city as text; media in transition; interrelations between cinema and metropolis; technologies of ritual and performance; spatial practices and mapping; cultural sites of memory, and/or art and cybernetic theory. We encourage applicants in contemporary art but also those working in earlier periods whose research engages with these issues. Ph.D. required, although advanced ABD candidates may be considered. The successful candidate will be a committed teacher and accomplished researcher with theoretical sophistication, an interdisciplinary orientation, and strong visual analytic skills. In collaboration with colleagues in the Division of Art History who work on calligraphic traditions, early printing, book history, and modern art and media culture, the successful candidate will help shape new curricular initiatives in both undergraduate and graduate programs.  

Faculty in the Division of Art History receive leaves, as well as research and travel support. In general the teaching load is 2/2.

The candidate will develop courses for undergraduate and graduate students, both general surveys and focused research seminars; mentor students on all levels; and supervise MA theses.

Proposed starting date: August 2008.
