B.A. in Art History Course of Study

General Education Curriculum 41 credit hours

Division of Art History:
Introduction to Art History (ARHS 1303, 1304, 1308)
The only 1000-level classes that count toward the art history major
are 1303, 1304 and 1308. Two of these are required and should be
taken during the first or sophomore year.

6 credit hours

Upper-Level Art History Courses: This requirement must be satisfied at the 3000-level or higher.

These hours are distributed as follows:

1. One course (3 hours) in each of the following five areas:
a. Ancient Art
b. Medieval Art
c. Renaissance and Baroque Art
d. Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Art
e. Non-Western Art

2. Electives in art history: four courses in any of the five areas.
Included in the 27 hours are at least two 4000-level seminars, in
the subject areas or as art history electives, to be taken in the
junior or senior year.

3. Architecture corequirement: discuss with adviser for appropriate course.

Studio Art 3 credit hours
Foreign Language: Students must have completed the intermediate level (12-16 hours) in one foreign language. 12 hours
Electives: Students will be advised to take free electives in Art History, History, Studio Art, Literature, or other fields that are relevant to their areas of particular interest. 30 credit hours

P. Gregory Warden, Professor of Art History, was invited to deliver the Eva Lorant Lecture at the British Museum in December 2007. He spoke on “Ritual and Destruction at the Etruscan Site of Poggio Colla.” He was also elected trustee of the Etruscan Society and has assumed the editorship of Etruscan Studies.
