Facilities:
At the Meadows School, Art students work as broadly and as experimentally
as they wish within an environment of open artistic exchange, surrounded by
artists in Dance, Music, Theatre, Film and Communications. Facilities for the
study of Art at SMU include well-lighted studios, individual workspaces for
advanced students, and excellent equipment to support all media taught, as well
as individual artistic experimentation. The Doolin Critique Gallery provides
a central space for critiques, discussion, and informal student exhibitions.
Specific facilities of note for instruction include:
- Sculpture studios, providing space and equipment for metal fabrication and welding, wood fabrication, foundry (ceramic shell and sand) and mixed media.
- A photography complex comprised of two black and white darkrooms and facilities for color processing, as well as digital processing and output up to 44".
- Ceramics studios for throwing and sculpture, equipped with two gas kilns, three electric kilns (including computer fired), and soda and raku kilns.
- Printmaking facilities, including a full intaglio and relief printing studio.
- Facilities for digital media, comprised of a complete dual platform lab (both Mac and PC) with 2-d and 3-d imaging software. The equipment provides for dedicated digital print output up to 44".
Exhibition facilities at the Meadows School include the Pollock Gallery and the Meadows Museum. The Pollock Gallery is the art exhibition space of the Division of Art whose program provides students with opportunities to experience exhibitions curated by the Division of Art. The exhibitions draw from a diversity of artists, time periods, and cultures. The Pollock also presents the B.F.A. and M.F.A. qualifying exhibitions. Link.
The Meadows Museum houses an internationally significant collection of Spanish art and mounts an active exhibition schedule of historical and contemporary exhibitions. Link.
The Meadows School and SMU offer excellent library resources, including the Hamon Arts Library, and technological resources including a school-wide computer center, as well as specific facilities within the Division of Art.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area includes a large artistic community with rich and varied resources and six internationally significant museums—the Meadows Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and the Kimbell Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. The area also boasts several contemporary exhibition spaces, including the MAC and the Arlington Museum, and a vibrant commercial gallery system.
