President Turner and the SMU Board of Trustees Honor Lamar Hunt's Memory

President Turner and the SMU Board of Trustees presented a resolution honoring the late Lamar Hunt to his wife and childern on May 10. Mr. Hunt was a respected SMU alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees. Below is the text of the resolution:

RESOLUTION IN HONOR AND MEMORY OF LAMAR HUNT

KNOW ALL PERSONS BY THESE PRESENTS, That WHEREAS, Lamar Hunt lived a life of entrepreneurial spirit, leadership and integrity; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hunt began his association with SMU as an undergraduate, playing on the freshmen baseball team, lettering in football, demonstrating his entrepreneurial abilities for which he later became so well known and respected, and graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1956; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his professional life Mr. Hunt combined his love of sports, entrepreneurial skills and integrity to: organize the American Football League of which his Dallas Texans, later the Kansas City Chiefs, were a part of the League; be a founding minority partner of the Chicago Bulls of the NBA; and be a principal investor and member of the Management Committee of Major League Soccer; and

WHEREAS, He served his profession in numerous ways, including membership on the Board of Directors of: the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, NFL Europe, the SMU-GTE Athletic Forum and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hunt has been honored for his service to his profession, including: induction into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, the Sports Hall of Fame of Missouri, the Sports Hall of Fame of Texas, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Texas Business Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hunt willingly gave of his time, talent and resources to enhance the University’s ability to serve its students, faculty and staff through his service as Co-chair of the Capital Campaign Athletics Committees, and the Board of the Mustang Club; and his service as a member of the Board of Trustees, serving in a variety of leadership positions, including Vice-Chair of the Board and Chair of the Athletics Committee.

WHEREAS, Lamar and Norma cheerfully supported the University through generous contributions in support of Ford Stadium/Loyd All-Sports Center and other campus projects, in recognition of which Mr. Hunt was presented the Mustang Award in 1997.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the members of the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University do hereby remember and honor Lamar Hunt, a truly outstanding member of this Board and the University family whose kindness, business integrity and entrepreneurial skills truly set him apart as a beacon for everyone who aspires to contribute to society by living a life of innovation and integrity.

RESOLVED, That this Resolution be presented to Norma Hunt, Lamar Hunt, Jr., Sharron Munson, Clark Hunt and Daniel Hunt so that they may know the high esteem in which their husband and father was held by those who had the joy of knowing him as he went about his service to others and the University.
