S. Leon Bennett

S. Leon Bennett was appointed vice president for legal affairs and governmental relations at SMU in 1983. He was elected general counsel in 1987 and University secretary in 1992.
In addition to the responsibilities associated with the Office of Legal Affairs, he serves as vice president for governmental relations.
Mr. Bennett earned his undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees at the University of Alabama. He entered the private practice of law in Alabama in 1970 as a partner in the firm of Ferrell & Bennett, and engaged in the general practice of law.
In 1977 he joined the legal staff of the University of Alabama, where he served as chief associate counsel until joining SMU. He is admitted to practice in Texas and Alabama, as well as federal courts in each state.
