The Leadership Certificate Program Requirements

  • One required workshop
  • Five additional workshops
  • Six hours of community service
  • Reflection paper

Note: the President’s Leadership Summits also count towards the five additional workshops requirement.

Workshops (click here for workshop schedule)
Workshops have the purpose of providing students with relevant knowledge and information pertaining to the area of leadership. Workshop speakers are typically current professors, administrators, staff, and other SMU representatives. Speakers not affiliated with SMU will also serve as workshop presenters on occasion.

Community Service
Those in leadership ultimately have the responsibility of helping others and assisting in making things better for all of us. Due to this, leadership is a responsibility that should never be taken lightly. So, the purpose of service in the community essentially is to provide students with an opportunity to help others and assist in making their lives better, while providing them with the freedom to contemplate the relationship between leadership and service.

Reflection Paper
Purpose of Reflection paper – The reflection paper has the purpose of providing students with an opportunity to think about their experiences gained while in workshops, service activities, and their own personal journey as a leader in the form of a brief paper. Hopefully this process will provide students with the opportunity to think about how they’ll use what they’ve gained from the Leadership Certificate in their future leadership endeavors. - Papers are to be at minimum two pages in length with a font no larger than 12 pt.
