At mile 15 we hiked about a mile through the jungle to the canal side to meet the boat. The trip through the rain forest jungle was an amazing trip. The dense foliage covered the ground and vined up trees over 100 feet in height. As you looked up through the forest canopy, the rising steam mixing with the sun lit beams produced a surreal image which conjured up images of a Joseph Conrad novel. About half way through the rain forest we came upon a troop of Spider Monkeys that watched us from a safe distance, while hurling objects at us as we walked under them. Dana and Joey saw some Capuchin monkeys, as well. As we approached the waiting boat in the canal, we heard the unearthly sound of Howler Monkeys. As the rest of the team joined us we headed north back to the station along the Rio Tortuguero canal. Hasta Pronto! Today's message was provided by Kent. |
