Enrollment Procedures for SMU Students

PLEASE NOTE: by enrolling in Intersessions courses, students agree to abide by all related university policies.

  1. Find your course
Consult your advisor if you need help figuring our what courses you need & when to take them. Consider alternate choices in case a class you want is full.
Check Dates for your term & make sure you know when you can enroll (your appointment is visible in my.SMU one month before enrollment opens).
Place preferred and alternate courses in your 'shopping cart'. All holds on your account must be clear prior to enrollment.

  2. Enroll!
You may enroll in my.SMU at your appointment time or anytime between then and the start of term.
Enroll as soon as possible to secure a seat in your preferred course!

  3. Get ready for your course
Check Deadlines for your term & make sure you know refund policies, as well as other important enrollment-related dates.
If you receive SMU financial aid, use our Tuition and Financial Aid Calculator, to estimate aid you're eligible for.  PLEASE NOTE: Summer students must request aid (a link to this form is posted in April when enrollment opens).  Students enrolled in 3 or more hours may apply for an Intersessions Scholarship.
    1. Sign up for on-campus housing and dining if you need them.
    2. Check out your course syllabus & order books.

  4. Pay for your course
Click here to view payment due dates Bursar’s Office.
Payment plans are available for Summer, but not for Jan Term or May Term, due to the condensed nature of those terms.

  5. Change of plans?
To cancel your enrollment and to learn about refunds, consult our cancellation page.
To change your schedule, we recommend using the SWAP function to change classes in my.SMU. Once enrolled, students cannot drop to 0 credit hours, so the system may not allow a student to drop and re-enroll.

Intersessions Policies

Enrolling in Intersessions

To enroll in an Intersessions course, use the same procedure you would for Fall & Spring,.  Log into my.SMU to enroll during your enrollment window (see below).  PLEASE NOTE that adding a course to your shopping cart does not constitute enrollment or save you a seat in the course. You must complete the enrollment transaction at the time of your enrollment appointment, or anytime following that appointment up until the start of term.

All enrollment appointments for current SMU students are scheduled on the same day, but the time you may enroll is determined by the number of credit hours you have completed.

Enrollment opens for (current students) Time
Seniors (students with 90+ credit hours)
8 a.m.
Juniors (students with 60-89 credit hours)
10 a.m.
All other students (with  59 credit hours
12 p.m.

Jan Term enrollment opens in early November (at the same time as enrollment for spring term).
May and June-July enrollment opens in early April (at the same time as enrollment for fall term).

New students (including visiting students) gain access to enrollment after current students.  Check Dates & Deadlines to learn more.

Intersessions have a short add period at the beginning of each term or session.  This is usually only 1 or 2 days, depending on the length of the session (see Dates & Deadlines for your term).  Adding a course at this time is subject to seat availability.  Instructor permission may also be required.  Due to the condensed nature of Intersessions, if you're considering adding the course after it's already begun, you're advised to reach out to the professor and begin attending class as soon as possible

Wait List

If you're unable to get a seat in the course you want, consider enrolling on the wait list. Use the same enrollment procedure you normally would through my.SMU, but look for a "Waitlist if Class Full" box on the Add Classes page.

If you want to wait for your preferred course but enroll in a back up course in case that doesn't work out, enroll in the back up course first.  Then use the SWAP function to get on the wait list for your preferred course.

Wait List guidelines and answers to frequent wait list questions can be found here.

Enrollment Limits

Jan Term and May Term students may enroll in one course per term*.

June-July students can enroll in up to 14 credit hours over the term, but they may not take more than 7 hours in June sessions, and 7 hours in July sessions*.

*Students may request an overload to these limits through their academic advisor.

Taking a class Pass/Fail, and Course repeats

Students may repeat a course or take any Intersessions course on a Pass/Fail basis, subject to the regular requirements and restrictions as presented in the University Catalog.  Please consult with your academic advisor when making the decision to take a course pass/fail.  Be advised that due to the condensed nature of Intersessions, the deadline to declare Pass/Fail comes very early in the term. Please plan accordingly.

Course cancellations & other change of plans

Program initiated cancellations

Priority enrollment deadlines are established for Jan Term, May Term, and Summer 11-day terms.  After these dates, courses with low enrollment may be cancelled by the program.  Enrollment after this date is still possible, subject to seat availability.  Priority enrollment deadlines fall two weeks prior to the start of a term or 11-day summer session.  If you're enrolled in a course cancelled by Intersessions, you will be notified by email and given the option to swap to another course or drop the course.

Student-initiated cancellations

If you are enrolled in multiple courses and want to cancel one of these, you can drop the course through my.SMU through the last day to drop a course (see Dates and Deadlines).

If you are enrolled in only one course or if you want to cancel all of your courses and withdraw from the term, you MUST fill out a Cancellation/Withdrawal form.  It will be processed by the Intersessions Office and then Enrollment Services.  Cancellation/withdrawal is not an automatic process, so it will take a few business days before the course is removed from your schedule in my.SMU and a refund to be processed (if applicable).

If you want to switch one course for another, you may do so using the SWAP function through my.SMU through the add period (see Dates & Deadlines), subject to seat availability. Professor permission may also be required after the start of term.

Online Courses

Online courses are generally 5 weeks in duration, even when held in Jan Term (where they meet on an adjusted schedule*).  While some work for the course is self-paced and asynchronous, students may be required to meet regular deadlines and participate in scheduled interaction with classmates and the professor via discussion boards, video conferencing, and other media.

Once enrolled, students receive instructions via email on how to connect to course resources and technology.  Checking email before and during online language courses is essential.  All online students must have reliable internet access, and a device with webcam, audio, microphone, and recording functionality.

Students may enroll in one online course during Jan Term*, and up to 14 credit hours over the summer term (a maximum of 7 hours in June sessions and maximum of 7 hours July sessions).

* Online courses in Jan Term begin immediately following the end of fall term and continue throughout the winter break.

Cancellation, refunds, late payments and late fees

The Office of the Bursar determines cancellation, refund, and payment due dates.  By enrolling in an intersession course, students agree to abide these requirements.  Failure to abide these deadlines will result in tuition and late fee charges.

Full refunds

You must cancel prior to the start of term to be eligible for a 100% tuition refund. See program Dates & Deadlines for your program dates.

Partial refunds

If you drop early in the term may be eligible for a partial refund.  For Jan Term, May Term, or an 11-day session, partial refund is only possible if the course is dropped on the first day of term. To understand your eligibility for a refund, check the Bursar's office refund policies.

The Financial Aid Office determines award amounts, policies and procedures for financial aid awards.  By enrolling in an intersession course, students agree to abide by these requirements.
