As an International Student or Scholar in the US, it’s very important that you comply with US tax law and understand the tax filing requirements of your visa. If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of the following questions, you must file a US tax return:
  • Have you worked in the US?
  • Did you receive a grant?
  • Did you receive an allowance?
  • Did you receive a stipend?
If you were working, you would’ve been subject to Federal and State taxes and therefore must file a tax return each year. If you haven’t worked or received funding, you must file a form called an 8843 exemption.
