About the Office of International Admissions and Relations
Mission Statement
The Office of International Admissions and Relations (known as The International Office ) supports Southern Methodist University and international students/scholars and their families by engaging in the following activities:
- Advising all international students/scholars on visa compliance issues
- Advising schools and departments on compliance issues
- Reporting to the Federal Government via the SEVIS system
- Recruiting foreign passport holders and Americans studying outside the United States for undergraduate programs
- Working with SMU alumni abroad
- Facilitating mutually beneficial institutional partnerships
We strive to carry out these activities in a professional manner and are committed to operating in the best interests of Southern Methodist University and in the best interests of the international constituencies we serve.
Services for International Students/Scholars
The Office provides or facilitates a variety of services for international students, scholars, and their families. We:
- Determine visa eligibility and prepare and issue all immigration documents for non-immigrant students, scholars and their dependents to apply for visas to come to SMU to study, teach and/or conduct research.
- Facilitate airport pick-up.
- Facilitate the International Friendship Program which matches international students/scholars with American friendship partner families.
- Facilitate the English “Conversation Buddy” program through the ESL Department.
- Conduct orientation programs at the beginning of each semester which provide information on maintaining immigration status and life at SMU.
- Advise students/scholars on immigration matters and assist them with immigration benefits and procedures.
- Provide Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshops for students who are eligible for pre- or post-completion employment.
- Facilitate visits to campus by the Social Security Office and the Department of Public Safety.
- Support and advise Global Connections, the international student organization at SMU

Work together with area institutions to provide tax workshops for international students/scholars.
