FALL SEMESTER, 1999
COURSE TITLE: Joan of Arc (Religion 111)
INSTRUCTOR: Jane Marie Pinzino
OFFICE: Music 317; ext. 3752
EMAIL: jpinzino@ups.edu
CLASS TIMES: Tuesday and Thursdays, 2:00-3:30, Library

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course grapples with the figure of Joan of Arc
(1412—1431) from the perspective of her own and succeeding generations.
We examine the historical situation in 15th-century Europe,
including the Hundred Years’ War and the culture of the Christian Church.
Joan’s letters, as well as her two ecclesiastical trials, (the condemnation
trial and the nullification trial), are the primary sources for understanding
Joan in her own time and in the next generation. In the latter part of
the course, we consider how Joan of Arc has developed as a model of female
heroism in English-speaking culture, especially in film and literature.
The course fulfills the Historical Perspective requirement.
