New 2008 Hunt Scholars

John (“Jack”) Benage graduated from Chaminade College Preparatory in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the Co-Captain of the varsity water polo and the varsity swim teams, and also played an integral role in the house system at his high school. In addition, he was active in theatre and campus ministry, served as a writer for the high school newspaper and yearbook, and organized an annual film festival at his school. He received the Kodak Young Leaders Award and the St. Louis County Outstanding Student Leader Award. He is planning to major in business at SMU.

Update:Jack was elected to be a First Year Senator for the SMU Student Senate. He is also an active general member of the Student Foundation and is involved in intramural soccer and flag football. He recently presented legislation to the Student Senate calling for the implementation of recycle bins during tailgates on the Boulevard.
Andrew Bogage is from Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from Hyde School in Bath, Maine. Throughout high school, he served as the elected dorm captain, held a position on the honor council, started a senior leadership group, and was a newspaper editor. Andrew was a member of the varsity football, basketball, and tennis teams. He was captain of the varsity tennis team for two years and was an all conference scholar and all conference athlete for Maine Independent Schools. Andrew worked as a part time admissions tour guide and a study hall tutor for underclassmen at the Hyde School. In the summers, Andrew served as camp counselor at Episcopal, Wesleyan, and Hyde camps. He held a volunteer internship at the United Way of Mid Coast Maine for the spring of his senior year and also participated in Big Brothers.

Update:Andrew has just been elected to the Virginia-Snyder hall council at SMU. He also holds a position on the SMU honor council, works as a desk attendant in the Dedman Center, and plays intramural basketball.  
Joshua Boydston graduated from Lindsay High School in Lindsay, Oklahoma, where he was Student Council Vice-President, class valedictorian, a member of his church youth group and bell choir, and captain of the varsity basketball team.  He plays piano, and participated at numerous state competitions in piano.  He was a member of National Honor Society, and President of his school’s chapter.  He is planning to study business. 
Rachel Brown graduated from Divine Savior Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She served as an editor of the school newspaper, and was one of the major leaders in the Pastoral Ministry Council of her high school.  For this group, she organized and led homelessness awareness week, was responsible for Lenten projects, and generally organized this large student service organization.  She received her high school’s Arthur B. Kohasky Leadership Award, given to one high school student from each of the region’s high schools recognizing leadership in multiple forms.  She participated in science and engineering fair competitions, placing in the health and medicine categories.  She was a member of the National Honor Society.  Her areas of study at SMU will likely be pre-medical.
Chelsea Cain graduated from Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana.  She was active in the Model UN chapter of her high school, serving as Secretary.  She also served as Vice President of the student service organization, and as senior editor of the Yearbook.  She received the school’s Whitford Service Award, given to a rising senior who has pursued excellence in the classroom while demonstrating commitment to serving others inside and outside the school environment.
Jasmine Carr graduated from Lancaster High School, where she was President of the Student Council and Band Captain.  She is extremely interested in education, having worked as a teacher’s assistant and tutor during high school, and also having been active in her church as a tutor.  She served as the student liaison to the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, and served as Vice-President of her school’s chapter.  At SMU, she plans to pursue various areas with the aim of becoming a teacher. 
Ingrid Castillo graduated from Ursuline Academy of Dallas.  At Ursuline, she served as Vice-President of the Student Council; she was also a member of the varsity lacrosse team, and the National Honor Society.  She was the founder of the National Hispanic Institute chapter at Ursuline.  In connection with this Institute, Ingrid served as a member of the coaching staff for a team of students who were preparing for competition in speech and debate.  Her academic interests focus on languages, including Japanese. 
Chad Cohen graduated from Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas.  He served as Senior Class President as well as President of his junior class.  In addition, he worked for four years on the high school magazine, serving as co-executive editor in his senior year.  He was appointed to serve as one of a nine-member Garland Youth Council, which is a voting entity with the mission of connecting youth concerns to the Garland City Council.  He was an officer in the Diversity Club, a National Merit Finalist, and a member of the National Honor Society.  His academic focus will include business.

Update:At SMU, Chad is a member of The Union and Mustang 11, which comprises the Class of 2012 Leadership. He is also a general member of the Student Foundation, member of the College Republicans, and the Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity
Brett Davis is a graduate of Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He participated in Lousiana Boys State competition, and was elected as Best Mayor of a city, and Best Mayor in the State competition.  He was also elected to serve as president of the Newman Players, an organization for developing and promoting school theater productions.  He was also selected to be Drum Major for the band during each of his four years of high school.  He has volunteered with a group for bridging academic gaps and with a local hospital.  He also was a member of the All-State Choir, and on the Academic Honor Roll for four years.  He plans to study business. 
Halle Griggs graduated from St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, where she served as President of the Student Body and Co-Captain of the varsity cross-country team.  As President of the Student Body, she served a key leadership role in a number of service projects performed by the students.  She served as a student ambassador, and was a member of the National Honor Society.  She received the Principal’s Leadership Award, and attended several Tennessee Leadership conferences on behalf of her high school.  Her area of likely study is political science. 
Derek Hubbard graduated from Hooks High School in Hooks, Texas.  He was the founder and President of his school’s chapter of Junior Statesmen of America.  In addition, he served as Student Council President.  He was a member of the National Honor Society and also played on the varsity football team.  In addition, he was selected to participate on behalf of his school in Texas Boys State, and in that capacity received the Federalist Party’s nomination for Governor.  He also served as a peer tutor at the high school, as well as various community service activities.  He plans to study business. 
David Jeffrey graduated from Westside Christian High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon.  He served as Vice-President of the Student Body, and Captain and MVP of the varsity track team.  He also participated as a student leader on his school’s Thailand mission trip; his school principal also selected him as the school’s representative to the International Justice Mission Conference in Washington, D.C.  He also was a member of the National Honor Society.  His academic interests focus in the area of political science.
Janielle Kastner graduated from Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas.  She served as Vice-President of the Student Government, as well as Vice-President of her sophomore class.  She also participated in the school’s student leadership institute, including serving as an ambassador to that institute for three years.  She held lead roles in several school theater productions, and won several state-wide competitions in speech and drama.  She was a National Merit Commended Scholar, and a member of the National Honor Society.  Her academic interests include theater. 
Kristina King graduated from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California.  She was President of her senior class, and captain of the varsity teams in both cross-country and track and field.  She also applied her sports talents to service as a volunteer in a recreational sports league for children with physical disabilities.  She was a member of the National Honor Society.  She is interested in English and literature studies. 
Jeffrey Klein is a graduate of Bishop Thomas K. Gorman High School in Tyler, Texas.  In addition to being Captain of the varsity football team and the varsity track and field team, he served as Student Body President.  He was a section leader in the school choir, a member of all-state choir; he held a number of roles in the school’s theater productions.  Jeff was also a volunteer for Hospice Care of East Texas.  He received the Tyler Rotary Club’s award for the Most Outstanding High School Senior.  He also was a member of the National Honor Society.  He is interested in studying finance. 
Marlee Klein is a graduate of Bellaire Senior High School in Bellaire (Houston), Texas.  She was the Editor-in-Chief of her high school newspaper, and secretary of the B’nai B’rith religious youth organization.  In addition, she served as corresponding Vice-President of her Temple Youth Group.  She served as a student mentor to incoming students, and a teaching assistant to her congregation’s weekly religious school.  She was a member of varsity lacrosse team, and the National Honor Society.  She is interested in studying marketing.

Update: Marlee is currently involved with the following SMU groups and organizations: The Union, Student Foundation, the LEAD Finance Committee, Hillel, the Daily Campus, and Honor Council.
Elisabeth Knutzen graduated from Carl Junction High School in Carl Junction, Missouri, where she served as Student Body President, captain of the varsity cheerleading squad, co-captain of the varsity volleyball team, and a class valedictorian. She received the 2008 Missouri Award for Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship. In addition, she was a member of her school’s concert choir, which performed at Carnegie Hall, and volunteered in freshman mentoring programs and Special Olympics. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a delegate to Missouri Girls State. At SMU, she is interested in studying accounting.
Emily Langille is a graduate of Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, Massachusetts.  She served as President of the Student Council, and an editor on the school’s yearbook.  She sang in her school’s A Capella choir and was active in numerous theater productions.  She was a recipient of the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Leadership Award.  In her church, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and soup kitchen volunteer.  She was a member of the National Honor Society.  Her academic interests focus on the area of communications.
Charles McCaslin graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portland, Oregon.  He was a senior patrol leader for his Boy Scout troop, and is an Eagle Scout.  He served as an op-ed writer for his school newspaper, and class representative to the student government.  Since eighth grade, he has served as a math tutor for a middle school in his school district.  In addition, he has been active in Mock Trial and has also been very involved in the school’s Young Republicans club, serving as President during his junior and senior years.  He was a member of the National Honor Society. 
Colton Nielson is a graduate of Topeka West High School in Topeka, Kansas.  He served as President of the Model United Nations Chapter at his high school, and was named President of the Security Council at Model UN-Kansas.  He was co-captain of the varsity baseball team, and also played on the varsity football and basketball teams.  He volunteered in several areas, including Alzheimers’ units and as a volunteer surgeon’s assistant.  He was a member of the National Honor Society, and served as President of his school’s chapter.  
Cullen Pabody graduated from James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas.  He was Class President in his junior and senior years, and chosen by the school principals to serve on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.  He was captain of the varsity football team, and a member of the varsity track team.  He was active in performing service work for Katy Christian Ministries.  He was a member of the National Honor Society.  He is interested in studying business. 
Seth Ramey is a graduate of Denton High School in Denton, Texas.  He served as Student Body President, and also participated in Texas Boys State, where he created and headed the Reform Committee in the Boys State House.  He performed extensive service through student government, through the First United Methodist Youth Group, and through serving as President of Key Club.  He plans to pursue a business major. 
Catherine Schraegle graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas.  She participated in Arkansas Girls State, where she was elected as a Senator.  She also served as President of her parish’s Catholic Youth Ministry group.  She was the Vice President of the National Honor Society at her high school.  In both her high school and church, she was involved in liturgy and outreach, including serving on the liturgy team, attending Catholic Youth conventions, serving as Eucharistic minister and lector, and volunteering with Hospice and St. Vincent’s Hospital.  She is interested in focusing on English with a creative writing concentration.
Laura Caitlin Schur is a graduate of John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas. She served as the Vice-President of her senior class. She also founded the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, and served as its President in her senior year. She was also active in peer assistance and leadership group. She was asked to be one of ten founding members of her high school’s Honor Council, which entailed writing and creating the implementation method for the honor code. She was also a member of the National Honor Society. She is interested in continuing as a teacher, and will probably pursue teacher’s certification at SMU.
Alia Tavakolian graduated from American Heritage Academy in Carrollton, Texas. She served as Vice-President of her junior class and Vice-President of her senior class. She was also active in speech and acting, placing several times in solo acting and poetry reading at state competitions, and serving as a lead attorney on her school’s mock trial team. She also served on her school’s Honor Council, and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Kristyn Mae Webster is a graduate of Brown Deer High School in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. Kristy was President of her class for all four years of high school, and President of the Student Council in her senior year. She was the captain of the varsity swimming team and captain of the varsity soccer team. Through her church, she participated in the choir throughout high school, and worked with the church’s Appalachian Service Project. She was also a member of the National Honor Society. She is interested in studying marketing.
