MSc in Human Rights and International Politics

MSc in Human Rights and International Politics University of Glasgow, Scotland

The MSc in Human Rights and International Politics offers a thorough academic analysis of one of the most salient and pressing issues in the contemporary world: the place of individual human rights in a system of international relations in which states rights have traditionally been paramount. The degree is genuinely interdisciplinary in content and structure, and is designed to ensure that students encounter both legal and political perspectives. However, it also accommodates the individual preferences of students to focus on one domain more than the other.

The MSc in Human Rights and International Politics draws on the Department of Politics' recognized expertise in political philosophy, theories of rights, and morality and normative theory, as well as its expertise in global and European institutions. Students on the MSc also benefit from the course offerings of the Department's highly successful 1-year taught Master's course in International Politics, and the abundant postgraduate teaching offered by the University's School of Law on topics including international law and human rights, globalization, and international economic, environmental, and criminal law. Students may also choose from courses offered by the Centre for Development Studies and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Throughout the program the emphasis is on small group teaching and close contact between students and staff. It culminates in a high quality piece of research in the form of an MSc dissertation, which could form the basis for a PhD thesis.

In addition to the academic content listed below, students will also be offered the opportunity to participate in a study trip to Geneva to visit UN and nongovernmental human rights organizations.

Why do an MSc in the Department of Politics at the University of Glasgow?

* The Department of Politics is one of the UK's leading institutions for political studies. It has been rated in the top 5% for research in the country, having achieved a "5" in the last three Research Assessment Exercises.
* The Department actively promotes small-group student-centred teaching. Most Masters-level seminars are led by permanent members of staff, and individual dissertation supervision is guaranteed. So students who come to Glasgow will benefit from intensive teaching by political scientists with strong publishing profiles and international reputations in their areas of expertise.
* We offer a wide range of optional courses allowing students to tailor their curricula to their academic interests and future career plans.
* The Department is committed to making students feel 'at home'. It regularly organizes informal staff/student occasions and it maintains strong channels of communications between staff and students, endeavouring to respond to student requirements wherever possible.
* The student body has a very cosmopolitan character. In the session 2007-08 there are 45 students on all programmes, and these students came to Glasgow from a number of different countries. This adds to the liveliness and breadth of experience that is brought to the class and it enriches the general student experience in the Department.
* After graduation, our alumni find work in a wide range of sectors, including government agencies, NGOs, international organisations, media, and business. Some also pursue further study, especially at the doctorate level.
