Basic Group Life Insurance/WorldWide Travel Assistance
SMU provides Basic Group Life Insurance through Reliance Standard at no cost to you. The plan is designed to provide financial assistance to your family in the event of your death.
Your beneficiary(ies) will receive one and one half times your annual base salary up to a maximum of $750,000. If you are a SMU Postdoctoral Fellow, your beneficiary will receive $10,000.
As part of this benefit, SMU employees have access to the WorldNet Travel Assist Program, which provides comprehensive international travel assistance services.

Through this program, SMU also provides a variety of travel assistance services through Reliance’s WorldNet Assist Program. Key benefits include emergency medical and personal assistance while traveling more than 100 miles away from home, and immediate access to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies in a medical-related emergency – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Summary of what you need to do
When you enroll, be sure to list the individuals you wish to designate as beneficiaries of your Basic Group Life Insurance on the Benefits Enrollment Form. You will need the Social Security number for each individual. If you do not name a beneficiary, or if your beneficiary dies before you (and you have not changed your beneficiary designations), Basic Group Life benefits will be paid to your estate.
You may change your beneficiary at any time by completing the Beneficiary Designation Form that can be found on the HR website.
