Divisions/Departments
In addition to the schools, five other major areas help SMU fulfill its mission by providing support services to the University community, sustaining student development, managing research materials, securing funding for University priorities and contributing to the vitality of campus life.

1 - Athletics
SMU’s 17 Division 1-A teams compete within Conference USA. Opportunities for students to enjoy athletic resources are an important part of a vibrant campus experience. While student-athletes develop teamwork and leadership skills, classmates and alumni enjoy the spirit of competition. SMU is committed to furthering its athletics program, which reflects the attitudes and values underlying the University’s overall mission: integrity, academic excellence, leadership, equity, diversity and success.

2 - Student Affairs
Student Affairs initiates and sustains student development and the quality of life at SMU through innovative opportunities for learning, cultural appreciation, personal growth, values clarification, ethical behavior, and skill development. Student Affairs strives to provide challenging, diverse and dynamic learning opportunities for all students, engaging them in a vibrant, out-of-classroom experience, which will prepare them to be leaders in a global society.

The “M” Award is the most highly coveted recognition bestowed upon students, faculty, staff and administrators on the SMU campus. The “M” Award recipients are an inspiration to others, giving unselfishly of their time and talents to make the University a better place for all of us to live.
3 - Business and Finance
Business and Finance provides high-quality support services to the University community and other stakeholders. These services include financial management, information technology, human resources management, auxiliary services, facilities planning and construction, and plant operations.

4 - Development and External Affairs (DEA)
Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by:
- securing funding for University priorities
- promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University
- heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU
- supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body
DEA includes the offices of Office of the Vice President, Development and Alumni Affairs, and Public Affairs.

5 - University Libraries
The University’s 10 libraries house the largest private collection of research materials in the Southwest, with nearly three million volumes. Main libraries include:
