SMU Health and Wellness Plan:  Helping You Take Care of You…

We all have many work-related responsibilities, as well as numerous personal responsibilities that consume a lot of our time and energy when we leave work each day.  Whether we are raising children, are just now thinking about starting a family, or are trying to help an older parent with health or other age-related issues, we often lose sight of the need to address our own healthcare needs.

Did You Know?

The SMU Health & Wellness PPO options administered by BCBSTX now cover 100% of the cost of routine mammograms, colonoscopies, and PSA (prostrate) screenings with no deductible and office visit co-pay? This benefit is in addition to the  $500 annual limit for preventive care benefit.

The SMU Health and Wellness Plan is proud to offer benefits designed to help you better manage your personal health care needs, as well as the needs of your family.

Regular exams and screenings can help detect cancer and other diseases in their earliest stages – when they are the most treatable.  Regular dental and vision exams can help prevent diseases of the mouth and eyes.  Employees enrolled in the Blue Cross BlueShield PPOs and the Dental and Vision plans have the following preventive care benefits:

·     Medical: Annual Routine Physical Exam (ages 2 and up) — The BCBSTX PPO options pay up to $500 per person, per year for routine annual physicals, medical screenings and immunizations.  The BCBSTX PPOs also cover 100% of the cost of routine Mammogram, Colonoscopy and PSA (Prostate) screenings, if administered by an in-network provider.   Routine preventive care services are not subject to your annual deductible or the $25 office visit copa.

  • SMU covers preventive tests and screening in accordance with BCBSTX Wellness Guidelines.  You can find the SMU Preventive Care Guidelines for Adults, Infants, Children and Adolescents – as well as Prenatal – on the Health and Wellness Program page of Benefits U.

    • Bring the Guidelines with you when you (or a family member) go for your annual physical.  To be sure that your preventive care claim is processed correctly, remind your doctor’s office staff to report the CPT code (services provided during the office visit) and ICD-9 code (reason for visit) for routine physicals, screenings & immunizations (including Mammogram, Colonoscopy and PSA screening) when they file your claim with BCBSTX.

    • BCBSTX Condition Management.  If you or an enrolled family member are living with a chronic health condition such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or lower back pain, you may face daily challenges in managing your health and quality of life.  The BCBSTX PPOs provide a comprehensive condition management program that works with you, your doctor and your medical plan to help identify ways to manage your health issues more effectively.  For information about this important resource call 1-800-462-3275 (option 1).

    • BCBSTX 24/7 Nurseline.  Good health starts by asking the right questions at the right time and those questions often come up unexpectedly, like when the doctor's office is closed.  The BCBSTX 24/7 Nurseline puts you in touch with caring registered nurses around the clock.  Call 1-800-462-3275 (option 2) or the phone number listed on you BCBSTX ID card.
