Residence Hall Academics
Residence hall life at SMU includes a number of living-learning opportunities.
- Several residence halls, or designated floors of residence halls, are reserved for members of the University Honors Program.
- The Hilltop Scholars Program is a living-learning community currently housed in Perkins Hall.
- Several other residence halls concentrate on a theme, such as the Fine Arts Community, the Multicultural House, the Wellness Connection and the SMU Service House. Check the Residence Life and Student Housing Web site for the most current housing information.
Academic Residence Advisers
Academic Resident Assistants – ARAs for short – are veteran SMU students who live alongside first-year students in the residence halls. The ARAs have been chosen because of their proven academic ability, extensive extracurricular accomplishments and commitment to the residential experience. The ARAs concentrate on students who are new to SMU. They provide academic support and assistance, connect students with useful campus resources and help foster an academic environment in the residence halls.
Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center
The Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center – known as the A-LEC – offers services to all levels of SMU students, including its most high-achieving students. It is housed in a spacious state-of-the-art facility that includes a large lounge, computer labs and rooms for group and individual tutoring. Visit the Web site of the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center.
National Fellowships and Awards
For students interested in pursuing national fellowships and awards, such as Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Truman and many others, SMU offers support and guidance through its Office of National Fellowships. The office is directed by Dr. Kathleen Hugley-Cook. For more details, click here.
