Residence Hall Academics

Residence hall life at SMU includes a number of living-learning opportunities.

  • Several residence halls, or designated floors of residence halls, are reserved for members of the University Honors Program.

  • The Hilltop Scholars Program is a living-learning community currently housed in Perkins Hall.

  • Several other residence halls concentrate on a theme, such as the Fine Arts Community, the Multicultural House, the Wellness Connection and the SMU Service House. Check the Residence Life and Student Housing Web site for the most current housing information.

Academic Residence Advisers

Academic Resident Assistants – ARAs for short – are veteran SMU students who live alongside first-year students in the residence halls. The ARAs have been chosen because of their proven academic ability, extensive extracurricular accomplishments and commitment to the residential experience. The ARAs concentrate on students who are new to SMU. They provide academic support and assistance, connect students with useful campus resources and help foster an academic environment in the residence halls.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Undergraduate Research Assistant Program
Faculty members in all colleges that teach undergraduate students (Dedman College, Meadows School of the Arts, the School of Engineering and the Cox School of Business) can apply for a stipend to support an undergraduate research assistant in a particular research project. Within the past year, students have received $3000 stipends to work as a URA in connection with professors’ research in engineering, anthropology, geology and psychology.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships

  • Tower Research Fellowships. The John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies offers several research fellowships to SMU undergraduate students to pursue collaborative work in politics and government. The undergraduate fellows work closely with faculty in developing a research project resulting in publication or a final paper presented at a professional meeting or before a faculty committee.

  • National Science Foundation and Undergraduate Fellowships. In various departments, ranging from anthropology to physics, SMU students have received fellowships to work with or under the supervision of professors with the support of funding from the National Science Foundation.

Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center
The Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center – known as the A-LEC – offers services to all levels of SMU students, including its most high-achieving students. It is housed in a spacious state-of-the-art facility that includes a large lounge, computer labs and rooms for group and individual tutoring. Visit the Web site of the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center.

National Fellowships and Awards
For students interested in pursuing national fellowships and awards, such as Rhodes, Marshall, Goldwater, Truman and many others, SMU offers support and guidance through its Office of National Fellowships. The office is directed by Dr. Kathleen Hugley-Cook. For more details, click here.
