Association Events in 2001-2002

We aim to list non-Health Law Association events that relate to the ethical, legal, or social aspects of medicine and health care.  For maps and directions, click on the link for Children's Medical Center or UT-Southwestern Medical School.

  • Ethics Grand Rounds
Every second Tuesday, from September through April, UTSW Medical School presents a distinguished lecturer -- often an academic lawyer -- who speaks on a topic in the field of ethics and law and science.

Click here for the current year's schedule of topics and speakers.

1.  Many organizations sponsor writing competitions for law students.  Here are links to the health-law-related ones we know about (note: some of this information may be out of date - check the host organization's web site for current guidance):

2.  In addition, many writing competitions are on topics that, with a little imagination, could easily lend themselves to a health-law focus, such as privacy, antitrust, tax, feminist jurisprudence, legal ethics, computer law, etc.  A good collection of all known law-student writing competitions is on the web site of the University of Memphis School of Law.  The information there can be a little dated, but if you need more current information on a listed competition, you can contact the sponsor directly or, often, through their web site.

  • http://supreme.findlaw.com: Click on “Supreme Court” then “case index” and check out the health law section (assuming SCOTUS has any health-law cases on its current docket)

  • American Health Lawyers Association: AHLA has incredibly cheap student memberships and a wealth of information about every aspect of health law, much of it free to the public or free to members.

The objectives of the Southern Methodist University Health Law Association are to raise awareness of health related legal issues; to generate student interest in health law; to facilitate an ongoing dialogue regarding health law and related legal issues; and to embrace the educational opportunities of law students interested in health law.
