Java issues with Kronos Upgrade

The previous version of Kronos TimeKeeper required an older version of Java. Following the upgrade, you should be prompted to install a more recent java client when you first login to the new Kronos.

  1. Go to https://timemgr.smu.edu
  2. Enter your Kronos username and password
  3. The dialog box should appear to install the required java client-J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 15
  4. Click Install
  5. Once the installation is complete, click Finish
  6. Return to https://timemgr.smu.edu and login with the appropriate Kronos credentials

Following the install of J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 15, you may be prompted to download the latest Java client (version 6).  If you choose to install version 6, the java client used by Kronos will remain installed on your machine.  When you login to timemgr.smu.edu, you may receive a Java Plug in Warning (see below).  Please click No. Close your browser and try again to load Kronos.

Troubleshooting Java Errors

Following the installation of the appropriate java client, you should be able to login to the new version of Kronos.  If you experience any difficulties, please do the following:

  1. Verify that your login and password are correct.  Kronos does not use your SMU ID number as the username or your SMU password.  It is a login and password that is unique to the Kronos system.  For password issues, please contact mriley@smu.edu.

  2. Don't use a desktop shortcut that you created with the previous version of kronos. Instead, type timemgr.smu.edu directly into your browser window.
  3. If you are working from home, you will need to first connect to SMUVPN in order to access Kronos.  For instructions on configuring the VPN client, go to www.smu.edu/help/docs.

  4. If it appears to be a browser issue (for example, the screen won't refresh, the login button remains greyed out, or it appears that nothing is happening when you login, etc), you will need to uninstall existing java clients on your computer.
    1. Click Start--- Control Panel
    2. Launch Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista)
    3. Uninstall all versions of Java and J2SE Runtime Environment that appear in the list.  You may have several different version installed at the same time.
    4. Once all Java clients have been removed, go to https://timemgr.smu.edu.  You should then be prompted to install the Java client required by Kronos.  See the instructions outlined above.

If problems persist, please contact the Help Desk at 214-768-4357.
