Health Insurance

Southern Methodist University is pleased to offer a new accident and illness insurance plan for students. Unicare Life and Health Insurance Company and Academic HealthPlans have customized a plan that will best serve the needs of our students at a fair price. Students who are registered for at least one credit hour are eligible for this new plan beginning August 13th, 2007. Changes from our previous policy include:
-
Students will be able to enroll on line as well as check benefits and claim status.
-
Benefits will be paid at the Health Center with 20% co-pay for lab or x-ray, a $15.00 co-pay for generic prescriptions and a $40.00 co-pay for name brand prescriptions.
-
All pre existing conditions are waived when treated at the Health Center.
-
Students will no longer be required to submit claims or claim forms for treatment out side of the health center.
-
Students will be issued a pharmacy card for prescriptions that are filled out side of the Health Center.
One of the more exciting benefits to our new student policy is the Global Assistance Service that will cover the student with additional benefits while traveling more than 100 miles from home or from campus. Included in the Global Assistance Service is a pre existing condition waiver, prescription assistance, lost luggage and document assistance and foreign hospital admission guarantee.
The policy and enrollment information is available at the Health Center or online at www.AHPcare.com\smu .
Students who have other health insurance will be given an itemized receipt of charges at the time of service upon request. This Receipt is adequate to file with your insurance company for reimbursement. It is the responsibility of the student to file claims with their private insurance company or to send all receipts to their parent(s) or guardian for insurance purposes.
