A Charitable Remainder Trust is a trust that holds and invests assets in such a way that income is paid out to the donor or other income beneficiary. When the trust terminates, the "remainder" of the principal amount in the trust is distributed to SMU. These types of trusts are described below:
- Unitrust – Payments are a stated percentage of the trust's principal, based on its value as determined annually. The value of the payments increases or decreases as the principal value of the trust appreciates or depreciates.
- Annuity Trust – Payments are stated in a certain amount of money or a percentage of the value of the principal when the trust is established. The amounts of these payments do not change as long as the trust continues in existence.
A Charitable Lead Trust is a gift to SMU of income from trust assets for a specified period of time. When the trust terminates, the trust principal is returned to the donor or his or her family. |
