HIP HIP Hurray!

Congratulations
Jo Ann Tupper!

Jo Ann reports that even though the rainy weather last weekend cut the Relay for Life short, her team collected the most money -- $6,000.  This was $1,200 more than last year’s winners.

Thank you to everyone who supported Jo Ann and Team MASH!

VIPs - Very Important Ponies

Some of our VIPs this month are:

Joe Papari, Cheryl Moore, Nancy Peterson, Dagmar Mueller, Alison Odom and the IP Team - Early last summer a group of DES and ITS staff began work on a project to get e-mail addresses to admitted students.  I'm glad to tell you that due to the hard work and great team play in ITS and DES, we are getting new admitted students access to their e-mail and ACCESS.SMU at the point of admission.  Thanks for making this happen.  This has been an important project.   Great Job! -- John Hall

Those People In Red - Andrew Snow, Alumni Association, had nothing but complements about the Senior Class Gift Dedication on May 14th.  He said that "Those people in Red could not have been nicer or more helpful."  He said, "they even fed me pizza as I set up for the Dedication Ceremony."

DES Celebrates

At the May Division of Enrollment Services Meeting, some of the staff shared their Hispanic culture with the group in a celebration of Cinco de Mayo.  Although many Texans celebrate Cinco de May as Mexican Independence Day, Josh Ruiz explained that the May date was when Mexico split from France.  True Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, when Mexico defeated Spain and became an independent country.

Organized by Anna Gomez, staff from central and south America wore clothing representing various areas and shared their ancestry.

Angie Flores, Josh Ruiz, Irma Herrera, Daniel Herrera, Laura Del Rio, Monica Gomez, Mark Gomez, Monica Cordero, Jorge Guerra, Luz Roque, Rod Del Rio and Anna Gomez (not shown) share various regional costumes.

The program included music from Mexico, Irma Herrera shared the history of Hispanic student recruitment at SMU, Josh Ruiz prepared a Power-point presentation showing accomplishments of Hispanics in the arts, sciences, industry, and culture --  and, of course, there was much food and fellowship.

Texas BUC$
goes on the Road

After the success of the North Texas Regional Drive In Conference held at SMU in March, Pat Woods and Chris Salone of Student Financial Services are helping plan area regional meeting for Texas BUC$ in San Antonio, Texas May 26th and 27th and in Houston, Texas June 14th and 15th. The two-day event is geared towards discussions of collection methods, professional development and new methods of payment receipt. The regional event continues to be a great recruitment opportunity and networking tool for smaller colleges and universities that are unable to attend the annual Texas BUC$ State Conference each year.

SMU Trivia

When did SMU establish its first academic requirements?

Answer:
1918
It was said that entrance requirements to SMU were loose but the curriculum was stiff.  The graduation requirements established in 1918 remained with few exceptions until 1940.  The heaviest requirement was English.  There was a language requirement of two years in high school and two years at SMU.  Each graduate had to have a course in the Bible.  Mathematics, lab course in two sciences, and two physical education course all cam e to be required by 1921. --
