OF NOTE
From the February 2003 edition of ITS Technology News - "Besides being used for testing, QPT can also be used for automating input into PeopleSoft Production.  Our investment may have already paid off.  Every semester, Financial Aid has to 'Aid Year Activate' all continuing students.  The number of continuing students for spring semester is over 6000.  To manually do that, it would have taken multiple people days to complete.  But Financial Aid wrote a test script using Mercury's product and was able to successfully Aid Year Activate all 6000+ in less than a day.  A big KUDOS goes out to Financial Aid."

February is Heart Month consider giving the gift of life and donate blood!

Heart Healthy Tips
from the American Heart Associations
Kick those bad habits - drop food high in saturated fat from your diet.
Develop an eating plan - Most women can lose an average of 1 to 2 lbs. a week by eating 1200-1500 calories a day, men 1500-1800 calories a day.
Losing 1-2 lbs/wk is a good rate of loss - Plan the kinds of food you'll eat, # of meals and snacks; don't skip whole categories of food; vary your diet; try to enjoy your food with less salt.  Most important - make these changes a part of your life.
Engage in physical activity. . . as a way of life - Check with your doctor to develop an exercise program that suits your needs and physical condition.
Whatever you do, have fun, make it rewarding and stick with it.

VIPs - Very Important Ponies

Some of our VIPs this month are:

Summer Kokic - worked all day to find a workaround to solve the problem that many staff have had with group e-mails.  Her co-worker said, "You are a real jewel!  We will be able to use this finding in many, many ways as we try to communicate with students via e-mail.  Thanks for your persistence."

Chris Salone - I was given a student account from several years ago to research.  I had no idea what to do.  Chris did the research on the old account, contacted the credit card company to see if the charge had been reversed, and has continued to handle this situation to resolve it for the student.  At 8am on a Wednesday, a student needed to pay his past due balance in order to enroll.  Chris took the payment and release the hold so the student would not have to come back at 10am.

Lillie Rose - was very friendly and personable.  She made sure to give me the help I needed right away and made me feel welcome in the Registrar's Office.  Very wonderful person to interact with, thank you for all your help.
A note from a parent stated, "I wanted to thank you for all that you did to get the certified transcript for my son to the correct places.  I know you said, 'It's just part of my job.' But to us, you went above and beyond and we thank you"

Charles Harper - I would like to share our appreciation for Charles Harper.  He should be nominated for the man of the year award.  He created a query for a check stock log on PS.  The manual process has taken from 1 to 2 hours.  Now it takes 20 minutes, tops!  He has helped with printer problems, and ACH problems.  We just want to show our appreciation.

James Swenson -  He is a great guy.  I'd give him a big "10."  Good Job!

Stephanie Nonnemacher - She worked through her lunch to help UG Admission reconcile its deposits.  We love her!  Stephanie was very personal and friendly.  Not only did she call, she gave me her direct line and she actually picker it up!  In person, she smiled and showed genuine concern.  Finally I have found an administrator at SMU who knows what to do, and does it well.

Kelly McMillan - Kelly is always fast, accurate and cheery while getting me the transcripts I need.   She is a real asset to your office, as I suspect she is very good with students as well.  Put a gold star by her name.

Student Loan/Recovery Team - a big thank you for processing the Refund checks so quickly -- it seems to be triple time from the past.

Sondra Pena - Several times after 4pm, I took a student to Sondra so they could settle their account and not have to come back.  Sondra always took the student with a smile!  Great and worked well with me!

TICS Team - Catherine, Lillie, and Kelly worked with Student Accounts to make sure that Financial Holds were settled and transcripts could be release.   Great customer service!

FA Blitz Committee

Financial Aid is blitzing the campus with information to assist students with the Financial Aid process.  Cathy Smith said, “Our goal is to get as many students and parents as possible to file their FAFSA early.  We are sending the same message but through many different vehicles.”  The sooner after February 1st the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is filed, the sooner award packaging can begin for the student.  Students are being told that the FAFSA must be filed by May 1 in order to be guaranteed institutional aid.

Postcards were sent to the undergraduate and graduate students home address during the winter break suggesting that they apply for their PIN, file the FAFSA on line, and giving the student the number with the Department of Education to direct his/er questions.

A banner was hung at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center – “It’s time to file your FAFSA.  Do so by May 1st.”

Table Tents will be placed in the Dining Halls and Stake signs will be put around campus announcing/encouraging students to file on line and early.

March 3 – 7th the Banner will be hung at the Hughes-Trigg again

March 4 and 26 there will be a workshop in G04 Fondren Library West at which students can apply for their PIN and work on their on line FAFSA with staff in attendance to provide assistance.

March 5th and 6th staff will be in the Crossing in the Hughes-Trigg handing our reminders (and candy!!!)
- File your FAFSA early . . . it’s a   LIFESAVER!
-
It’s CRUNCH time . . . file your FAFSA now!

- PAYDAY will come . . . when you file your FAFSA

Resident Assistants will be given materials to create a Bulletin Board in the Residence Hall providing students with information on filing the FAFSA

There has been and will be announcements on ACCESS.SMU reminding students to file their FAFSA

Letters and postcards will be sent to parents around the end of March reminding them to file their FAFSA

Emails are being sent to students announcing the deadlines and process to file FAFSA on line.

The FA Blitz Committee is composed of
June Hagler, Cindy Detgen, Marilyn Roubal, Christina Little,     Summer Kokic, Christina Alexander, Cathy Smith

SMU Trivia
Who is Jerry Levias and what is his tie to SMU?

Answer:
Jerry Levias was one of the most exciting football players in Houston Oiler history.  He caught 41 passes for 529 yards and 5 touchdowns in 1970.
As member of the SMU Football team, Jerry Levias led the Mustangs in scoring in 1966 with 54 points.
A consensus All-American in 1968, he was named most valuable player in the American Bowl.
Mr. Levias was the first African-American player in the Southwest Conference to receive an athletic scholarship after choosing SMU largely because of its accounting program.
