Beth Newman’s work is in Victorian literature, primarily fiction.  Her book, Subjects on Display, draws upon feminist and psychoanalytic theory in the interpretation of nineteenth-century British novels.  More recent, developing interests include ideas and attitudes towards language in nineteenth-century British literature and society; the industrial novel; Victorian poetry and poetics.
