
In case of emergency, SMU will attempt to
communicate with you in a number of ways. Notification may reach you by city
sirens, police vehicle speakers, public address systems, bullhorns, test
messages, phone calls, building managers or other means.
Following is a guide to emergency situations and actions you should take based on a particular situation. (Click here to download a .pdf for printing and posting)
There is an active shooter or other violence on campus
- Lock or barricade doors.
- Turn out the lights, close window blinds.
- Get down on the floor, stay away from windows.
- Wait for "all clear" by police.
There is a fire, explosion, hazardous substance contamination, gas leak, or utilities shutdown inside or near the building
- Leave the building, don't use elevators
- Assist the disabled
- Take valuables and cell phone with you
- Proceed to assembly area outside
There is a tornado, severe thunderstorm, flooding, ice storm, hail, high winds, sleet or other extreme weather condition near SMU.
- Tornado alert (outdoor sirens) - immediately go to lowest level of building, interior rooms or hallways, away from windows and glass.
- Stay inside or seek indoor refuge until danger has passed
- For SMU closings, call 214-SMU-INFO (768-4636).
There is an outdoor release of hazardous chemicals that may contaminate the outside air or a tornado siren has been sounded.
- Seek refuge inside a building and remain there.
- Ventilation systems will be turned off.
- Keep tuned to media, if possible.
- Wait for "all clear" from campus officials.
