Spirituality and Its Relationship to Wellness

In general, spirituality provides a dimension that people need in their lives. It enables people to reach beyond the self and its needs, and also to recognize values larger than the immediate community or even the nation and world.

Especially important are the ways that spirituality helps each person:

-- to live with an attitude of self-affirmation, since the value and importance of each individual are taught in religious faith.

-- to have faith in the future, make plans, and have confidence in the value of effort and achievement

-- to overcome difficulties and setbacks, not only from receiving inner strength, but also from knowing that there is more to life than we are often able to see at the time

-- to integrate into family and community, since spirituality stresses healthy relationships of caring, support and forgiveness

-- to find fulfillment in causes that constantly stretch the self- consciousness, since religion values the whole world, including the natural environment

-- to grow and mature, and expect more from oneself and the world each day, since religions challenge complacency and self-satisfaction

-- to have a deep respect for the world, including our own physical bodies since they are a gift given to us for our use and care

Spirituality seems to reinforce a sound body and balanced lifestyle. It not only strengthens and reassures, but it also provides a constant challenge to be better and grow in every way.
