SMU offers two bilingual education programs for teachers of
students whose native language is not English. Detailed information about
the two programs can be found on their respective websites.
Supplemental Certification in Bilingual Education
Southern Methodist University offers the four courses (three credits each) required to earn the Supplemental Certification (formerly an endorsement program) in bilingual education for teachers of students who do not speak English as their primary language.
Since most of the students are in-service teachers, classes meet in the late afternoon and evenings during the spring, fall, and summer semesters. The required twelve required course may be applied to the Master of Bilingual Program or to another master’s program with the approval of the graduate advisor. In addition to completing the coursework required for supplemental certification, candidates must pass the tests for supplemental certification in Texas.
SMU offers a special reduced tuition rate for educators. Additionally, applicants can contact the Bilingual Education Office for information about scholarships. Financial aid may also be available from an applicant’s school district. For further information about the supplemental certification program, click here.
The Master of Bilingual Education degree program offers an
interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares specialists in the field of bilingual
education and master teachers of students who do not speak English as their
primary language. MBE students may choose one of two degree
plans to pursue--the Traditional Plan or the Gifted & Talented Focus Plan.
Designed for practicing teachers, the MBE program includes requirements in bilingual education such as literacy, second language teaching, bilingual math and science instruction, linguistics, culture/multicultural education, and community-based research. The program meets the requirements of the Texas Education Agency for master's level programs in bilingual education. The ESL Certification Program offers the four courses that are required for English as a Second Language (ESL) certification in the State of Texas. These courses may also be applied toward the 36-credit-hour Master of Education with a specialization in ESL. To learn more about this program, visit the ESL Certification webpage.
