Strategies for Accommodating and Teaching ESL Students in Diverse Classrooms is a workshop for K-12 teachers who would like to support, accommodate, and empower their students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Presenters will facilitate large and small group activities designed to meet the needs of teachers of all grades and content areas. This interactive workshop will include presentations, discussions, and lesson-planning ideas. Working collaboratively with facilitators and colleagues, teachers will apply workshop strategies and concepts to their own learner populations.

Participants will leave with:

  • Further knowledge about ESL-learner educational and emotional needs
  • Strategies for teaching and making accommodations for ESL learners
  • 12 hours of in-service credit
  • Electronic and print resources on teaching ESL

Participants will explore the following topics:

  • ESL learners and the mainstream classroom environment
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues
  • Rethinking and expanding teaching and assessment practices
  • Teaching and reinforcing academic language
  • Strategies to address writing issues
  • Strategies to address reading issues
  • Developing oral language with group work
  • Creating a culturally inclusive classroom
  • Language learning strategies

The workshop meets on June 8th and 9th from 8:30. Participants will earn 12 contact hours of staff development credit from SMU on completion of the workshop.

Cost

The cost to participate is $150.

Registration Information

Please register early, as class size is limited. You will receive a class confirmation and parking pass. Classes are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. Requests for refunds must be received seven days before the workshop; after that time there will be no refund. Cancellation prior to one week will be refunded less a $15 handling fee.
